What does friendship mean to you?
When I was in High School I was part of a group of girls that hung out all the time, we did everything together in School and out of School but once we had finished High School and we all moved on to college and other paths in our lives, the friendships we had no longer existed. Out of the group of 11 girls I stayed friends with 2 of the girls and one of them became my best friend (BFF) or so I thought. From the age of 11-21 we did everything together from playing on the school Netball team, Rounders team to being in the same dance group. We even helped each other out when it came to our exams, we played a big role in each others life to the point that we were no longer like best friends, we were family. Our families are alike in so many ways that we fitted in at each others family events. Little did I know that we were coming to a part in our lives where the friendship we had for 10 years was coming to a screeching end. To me we where the definition of a friendship but what we had wasn't the definition of BFF's.
The definition of friendship:
Friendship is a form of interpersonal relationship generally considered to be closer than association, although there is a range of degrees of intimacy in both friendships and associations. Friendship and association can be thought of as spanning across the same continuum. The value that is found in friendships is often the result of a friend demonstrating the following on a consistent basis:
The tendency to desire what is best for the other. Sympathy and empathy. Honesty, perhaps in situations where it may be difficult for others to speak the truth, especially in terms of pointing out the perceived faults of one's counterpart. Mutual understanding and compassion. Trust in one another (able to express feelings - including in relation to the other's actions - without the fear of being judged); able to go to each other for emotional support. Positive reciprocity - a relationship is based on equal giving and taking between the two parties.
Acquaintance: a friend, but sharing of emotional ties isn't present. An example would be a coworker with whom you enjoy eating lunch or having coffee, but would not look to for emotional support. Many "friends" that appear on social networking sites are generally acquaintances in real life.
Best friend (or the closest friend): A person with whom someone shares extremely strong interpersonal ties with as a friend.
BFF ("best friend forever"): Slang used primarily by teenagers and young adult women to describe a girl friend or close best friend who will be around forever NO MATTER WHAT.
A good friendships enhance an individual's sense of happiness and overall well-being. When two people share a strong bond of mutual understanding, respect and Love it lays the stone strong foundation for an everlasting friendship. This bond gets stronger with time, the trust between the two people grows and so does the attachment. This is the beauty of the relationship and is the essential meaning of friendship. Being friends means being there for each other at all times, whether it's good or bad. A friend needs to be very understanding and give each other the benefit of the doubt. Ideally the meaning of friendship is sharing unconditional Love for each other.
Love: Love is closely related to friendship in that it involves strong interpersonal ties between two or more people. Being in a relationship with someone usually means you are very close and you can confide in each other.
In terms of interpersonal relationships, there are two distinct types of Love:
Platonic Love: is a deep and non-romantic connection or friendship between two individuals. It is Love where the sexual element does not enter.
Romantic Love: is considered similar to Platonic Love, but involves sexual elements. Can you define the status of your friendship and make it a BFF that lasts forever? A friendship is a beautiful thing, it becomes more than two people just hanging out. It develops into an emotional connection of Love, happiness, encouragement and hope that you will always have someone to share your life with on a different level that only they will understand.
